Biography
Jacob Abrahamse is a Canadian tenor praised by Opera Canada as a “gifted tenor” and an “impressive Alfredo” for his work in La traviata. Known for his dynamic stage presence and refined vocal artistry, he performs throughout North America in opera, oratorio, and concert repertoire.
In the 2025–2026 season, Abrahamse makes his debut with The Dallas Opera as The Snake and The Vain Man in Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince and appears as a finalist in the Canadian Opera Company’s Centre Stage Competition. He also performs as the tenor soloist in Haydn’s Die Schöpfung with the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra.
A two-time Apprentice Singer at The Santa Fe Opera, Abrahamse has appeared as the Street Vendor in Puccini’s La bohème and covered roles including Don Curzio (Le nozze di Figaro) and Faninal’s Major Domo and First Lackey (Der Rosenkavalier). He earned critical praise for his portrayal of Alfredo in La traviata with Brott Opera, with Opera Canada highlighting his “remarkable” performance and “particularly stellar passages” in De’ miei bollenti spiriti and O mio rimorso.
Abrahamse’s operatic repertoire includes Frederic (The Pirates of Penzance), Ralph Rackstraw (H.M.S. Pinafore), and roles in Okoye’s Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed That Line to Freedom. A champion of contemporary opera, he has performed works by Dean Burry, Lloyd Burritt, and Abigail Richardson-Schulte, and made his operatic debut creating the role of the Holy Child in R. Murray Schafer’s The Children’s Crusade.
As an oratorio soloist, Abrahamse has appeared with ensembles including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Roy Thomson Hall in Mendelssohn’s Elijah, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir in Bach’s Mass in B Minor, and in Handel’s Messiah with orchestras and choirs across Ontario.
Abrahamse holds a Master of Arts from Trent University and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Toronto. He is a recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award from the Province of Ontario and two Civic Awards from the City of Peterborough.
